SEVENTEEN

2 DAYS EARLIER

He tried to open his eyes and make out where he was. There was nothing familiar about the room he was in. The thin cream curtains, which were letting a considerable amount of light into the room, didn’t look right. The wardrobes weren’t in the usual place. The television hanging from the wall opposite him was half the size it should have been. The satin sheets his crumpled body was buried beneath were the wrong colour and didn’t smell right. No, he had to deduce, this was not his bedroom.

He tried to remember back to what had happened the night before; where he had been, who he had seen, but it was all a blur. Had he met somebody? It was the most likely conclusion he could draw but whoever she was, she was not in the room now. His senses were still not working quite right but as his hearing came back online he could make out the sound of water running in the distance, maybe a shower and a strange whirring noise that would last about thirty seconds at a time but then stop, before restarting moments later. A razor maybe? An alarm clock maybe?

He let out a long yawn and ruffled his bleached blonde, tousled locks. The yawn turned into a mammoth stretch as he carefully extended each of the muscles in his arms and then legs. There were no other clues in the room as to where he was so he decided to get up and investigate. He climbed off the bed and walked over to a wall mirror hanging to his right-hand side. It was at this moment he realised that he wasn’t wearing any underwear or pyjamas. Not that that mattered, he quite liked looking at his naked body in all its glory. It was something he tended to do at least twice a day.

Dmitri Bobrakov was twenty-one years old and had only been living in London for four months. He was born in Moscow and had attended only the best schools. But he had never been academically-minded, much preferring to spend his time kicking a football around with the other children or racing the older boys in the playground. He had always been better than boys his own age and he used to enjoy showing off his ball control in front of those watching. It was doing this that had led to him being recruited to a small local football team and as he had grown and his body developed he had swiftly been registered at Spartak Moscow, the city’s premier team. He made his debut at seventeen and by his eighteenth birthday he was featuring regularly in the first team.

He enjoyed playing for Spartak but was ambitious and wanted to explore the world more. His agent managed to register interest from several top flight clubs across Europe and in the end he had similarly large financial offers from half a dozen clubs all eager to sign ‘the next big thing’.
